What is it?

There are a huge number of definitions about what counselling or therapy is. These are my thoughts. Therapy is about being able to explore your own mind, thoughts, and feelings with an independent professional guide. Most people come to therapy because they have something that is troubling them and they want someone independent to confidentially talk it through with and maybe gain some understanding about the issue or perhaps why they are the way they are. At a deeper level undoing some of your past emotional knots can have life changing effects in overcoming compulsions or ongoing difficulties or patterns in your life.

I work from the higher thinking cognitive levels, way down to the deeper emotional & sub-conscious levels primarily as an Integrative Humanistic Counsellor. I integrate primarily Roger's Person Centred Therapy, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis as well as some more higher level Cognitive techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or (CBT) to give me a broad range of ways to work with you and your situation.

I am fully trained, professionally supervised, indemnified and work by the code of ethics of my professional body, the BACP.

If you are interested in finding out more, the BACP have some useful background as well as the National Institute of Clinical Excellence who are strong proponents of therapy.

If you are wondering whether counselling is for you and would like to find out more, please get in touch. I always suggest that we meet first for an introductory session at no charge and no obligation to explore what might or might not work for you and to see how we get along.

"The image of Therapeutic Counselling and Psychotherapy has changed. The newer image is based more in the reality that therapy is a great way to develop yourself by learning about who you are and why you are the way you are.

Once you have the knowledge you have the option to change or not. Therapy is seen nowadays more as a positive reflection on your desire to take control of your life and develop yourself."

How I work

Who is it for?

It is for anyone, from any walk of life or background, whether they are going through a difficult patch or just interested in understanding themselves more fully. I work with a very broad spectrum of people of all ages and circumstances.

Though there does not need to be a specific area, some typical Therapy areas that I work with a lot are:

  • Difficulty in family or general relationships
  • Anxiety or troubling emotions & feelings
  • Depression
  • Bereavement
  • Divorce
  • Major life change

You might just not feel right and need to talk through what is happening to resolve it. You will not necessarily know what the issue is and would use therapy to understand and resolve it.
